Authors Note: This piece is about Jack’s Secret by Roland Smith and how jack’s family gets robbers in their house and forces Jacks mom to say something that she doesn’t wish to say.
Imagine sleeping in your room, dreaming a wonderful dream and all of a sudden you wake up to this devilish voice, not knowing what it is you move your head up and get it pushed back onto your pillow. When that happened the devilish voice says to shut up and then they put a gag in your mouth. Jack has a major problem and that his family is falling apart, his parents have been arguing, and his dad is a Drug dealer. This is what happened to Jack in the book Zack’s Lie by Roland Smith.
Many things are going through Jack’s mind while the robbers are in there house. The only thing that should be going through his mind is how he is going to get out of his mess. Now the robbers are telling Jacks mom to say the words “They will kill us if you talk.” Then when the robbers call jacks dad they held the phone to her mouth and she said “They will kill us if you talk.” Then the robbers untied Jack and said that he doesn’t move for a half hour, and that they will be watching. After the half hour is over, Jack unties his sister and mother. And the robber said to carry out the rest of your lives without telling anyone about the night that the robbers were at their house.
Since Jack had those people break in they have been forced to leave the city that they once called home. Now they are going to have to change their names, and live in a totally different place of the United States. To be safe they won’t tell anyone about the robbers it will just be a family secret. Jacks solution is just going to be to get out of the situation that his dad is a drug dealer that has gotten caught and the government taking over there house. With that happening there family is going to come together, and the big problem that Jack had will be resolved.

The Big Secret

Authors Note: This creative piece is about the main characters secret, in The City of Ember, by Jeanne DuPrau. This is the scene if Doon and Lina had told everybody about the secret room down in the Pipe works.
Imagine a world of darkness and scarcity, scarcity of everything from food, water, light, and even the hope of survival. In The City of Ember Doon and Lina the two main characters have a big secret and they are holding it in so that the city doesn’t go crazy.
When Doon is in the pipe works he finds a room and he is confused what it is used for until, he tries to open it and he finds a key in the knob of the door. While looking inside he finds a big blob on the couch. As he investigates even more he realizes that it is the Mayor in a hidden room full of supplies that the mayor has been Hording for himself. Then Doon immediately tells Lina the big news.
When Doon tells Lina the big news, Doon and Lina are put into a situation that they don’t want to be in. The situation is that they can either tell the people about it and they may go crazy and attack the mayor, or they could keep quiet and have their own little secret. Then when Doon and Lina find out a way to get out of the city they are put in a even bigger situation, because if they tell people they would save everybody, but if they tell everybody they may go crazy and hurt other people.
When Lina and Doon try to find a way to get out of the city using “The Instructions for Egress” they eventually do find a way out of the city. Then they write the note they were going to give it to Clary they forget about it and they leave the city, and get out for good!
When scavenging around they find a crevice in the ground and when they go in the get stopped not by a wall but by a sheer drop, and when they look down they see ember. Then they realize that if they put the note in something that will make if fall to the ground someone will get the note. So Doon puts the note in his shirt puts a rock in his shirt and throws it down to ember.
After that happens the people of ember will get the note realize that Doon and Lina are missing and try to escape out of the pipe works, in the process many people will get selfish and fight people over the boats like Lina predicted when they were deciding to tell everybody about the escape route. Then the older people that are living in Ember will stay and the younger generation will leave for the new world. The reason that will happen is because of Lina saying that the journey is tough and that the older generation won’t want to risk it and the younger more eager generation will. Then since the younger generation is making the trip they will have shorter fuses and will fight over the boats and the candles.
When Darkness and scarcity run over a population people tend to worry and freak out, but then you get that small group of people who want to solve the issue. In The City of Ember there is less than a group. There is two people who want to save the city and they believe that they do when they get out and give the note to the people.

D-Day

Authors note: This is my creative piece on D-day and It is being graded on word choice.
Minutes feel like days and seconds feel like hours, standing in the duck waiting and waiting, then the Lieutenant yells out 30 SECONDS, and you start to pray, praying for your life. Then crash and the doors sling open, and you hear a wave of gunfire, as your comrades are getting torn to shreds as your are rained on with blood you make a quick decision for your life and jump over the side of the duck into the 12 feet of water.
As you drop to the bottom of ocean you have to take off your backpack witch is carrying your food water and ammo, so when your pack is off you have to swim up twelve feet with only so much breath left in your lungs. As you submerge you gasp for air, but think that you aren’t going to need air for very long. So you start to swim, weaving in and out of the dead bodies in the water you hit the beach and you stand up and you get a great amount of adrenalin that pushes you forward and up the beach. After you run for a barrier you turn around and look back on the beach and see your nightmares coming true.  The sight you are seeing is your comrades the people you lived among for years are being torn to shreds by mortars and the mounted mg 42 in the towers ahead, when you look to your left you see PVT. Miller picking up his arm witch had be demolished by a mortar shell  and putting it where it is supposed to go. You sit down in disgust and start to cry.
Out of the corner of your tear filled eye you see the Lieutenant and he is calling you over. With one last push you get on your feet and start to run. You hear what seems like a MG-42 rounds hitting the blood covered dirt behind you; when you get to the lieutenant, you find out that he has gathered 15 other men. The men looked petrified, all the men where sobbing wet, they looked like you could ring them out like a towel. The lieutenant is still is focused on the mission and all he is thinking is get to the hill and we will be safe, for the time being. The lieutenant yells out to us sprint for the hill and then he takes off on a full sprint. All the men looked at each other nodded without saying a word and starting sprinting to the base of the hill. When the men get there you find out that out of the 15 men there are 3 men without guns at all there is one machine gunner it very little ammo and the rest of the men have m1-garands with maybe only 1 magazine.  Then the lieutenant stands up and gives us a signal to keep moving up the hill and target the mg-42 gunners. As soon as we got to the top of the hill the mg-42 gunners were targeting us immediately. So we fell back down the hill and then mortar shells were hitting us in all areas we were dropping like flies. As soon as we got to the bottom of the hill something hit the ground in front of me but it didn’t dwell on me what it was until bang it hit me. All I saw was a bright light, and what I heard was a high pitch screech. Then I was out cold, hours later I woke up everything was quite, or maybe I was just deaf, the only thing I knew was I had to get to the rendezvous point.

The Underground World

Authors Note: This is my speech piece on the City of Ember.
Imagine living in a dark underground world where there is very little light, no warmth from the sun, and no hope for a surviving city. In the City of Ember, the people are losing hope for their falling apart city.
In the beginning of the book as a reader you get a feeling that life stinks for the people of the city. As you kept on reading and when Lina and Doon the two main characters get assigned their jobs of messenger and pipe works. You realize that life does stink if you have to draw your job out of a draw string bag. Then on the first day of the job and when Doon goes down into the Pipe works you get a feeling of that the city is going to fold in, and that there is no hope for the people. Then there is the question if that if the City wasn’t there how it would change the book?
If the setting of the book was different there would be no point of the book, say it was over the ground and got sunlight, there would be no point because they could hunt for food, they could dig for water, and they could use the sunlight for warmth and power.
Then since the setting is where it is the plot doesn’t have to change because, it totally makes since, after 241 years a generator can only power so much, so that is why the plot is perfect. Then if the characters are in a different setting the book would have totally different characters.
The setting makes the characters that they are because without the problems that are going on with the city, they would have no business saving something that doesn’t need to be saved. Say the setting was over the ground they would just be regular people.
The city of ember is a book that can’t have a setting that is anything different than it is and if it was the book would have no purpose.
